This is a link to 4 tracks using raw and manipulated field recordings made in China combined with sounds from children's toys.  Each track has a photo from China, click on a picture and find the mp3 link just below it.  Ben Owen has invited many interesting sound artists to contribute to his mp3 archive, ADDENDA.

DINING ON SHORT WAVES
(2001)
This was one of four pieces winning the 4X4 award from the Glasgow Centre for Contemporary Arts.  The chair of the selection panel was Robin Rimbaud (Scanner), and here's how he described it:
Michael V. Farley's work "Dining On Short Waves" presents two bar phrases of short wave band caught up in a collage of random needle drops, scratches and cuts in the groove of an LP.  The sonic scuffling irregularities of this raw material creates a fragmented miniature around an object of history, the vinyl record.
